Low Temperature Ball Valves: ball valves for temperature range from 0° to -29°C (32° to -20,2°F) can have soft seated construction with a wide range of possible thermoplastic inserts (Devlon V, Nylon, RPTFE, PEEK, PCTFE) and elastomer seals O-ring (FKM, FFKM, HNBR, EPDM, FEPM); particular care should be given to Charpy Impact testing of carbon steel, low temperature carbon steel and ferritic, martensitic and duplex alloys to verify that selected material is suitable for required minimum design temperature; carbon steel and low temperature carbon steel, stainless steel and duplex materials are acceptable if suitable to other service conditions and pressure ratings.

When Natural Gas has to be separated into fractions or treated to protect equipment from contaminants (acids), first stage of sweetering and acid removal at 0° to -50°C (32° to -58°F), are the pre-cooling processes necessary to do that before gas liquefaction stage; propane or a mixture with other gases in small quantities is the cooling element. This application can exist in combination with other service conditions, including corrosive & dirty applications with toxic substances, flammable liquids (LNG, LPG or NGL condensate) or generic hydrocarbon gas in high pressure or high temperature applications.

Ball valves for this temperature range can have soft seated construction with a wide range of possible thermoplastic inserts (Devlon V, Nylon, RPTFE, PEEK, PCTFE) but restricted selection in elastomer seals O-ring (FKM GLT, HNBR, EPDM), the use of lip seals is recommended on stem seals as a minimum but it is not mandatory; particular care should be given to Charpy Impact testing of low temperature carbon steel (-46°C/-50,8°F) and ferritic, martensitic and duplex alloys to verify that selected material is suitable for required minimum design temperature; low temperature carbon steel, stainless steel and duplex materials are acceptable if suitable to other service conditions and pressure ratings; on high pressure applications XM19 is recommended as trim material.
